The problem

Intelligent Health uses behaviour change and technology to get large numbers of people moving. Beat the Street is an activity tracking and competition scheme for schoolchildren: their walking is logged with NFC membership cards, and schools compete on a leaderboard.

The idea only works if the results are quick, accurate and fun to look at. Behind the leaderboard is a lot of data, often tens of thousands of new readings a day from a single borough, and Intelligent Health planned to run the scheme in many places at once.

What we had to solve

01

Data, data and more data

Readings arrive from participating schools and boroughs all day. Each had to be collected, checked and credited to the right child and school.

02

Results children want to see

Leaderboards and personal dashboards had to be clear and engaging enough to keep a ten-year-old coming back.

03

A new area isn't a new system

Each new scheme or site had to launch on the platform already running, not as a separate build.

04

Many teams, one platform

Local organisers, schools and Intelligent Health staff each needed to manage their own part without affecting anyone else's.

What we built

A boy running across a sunny park

A single Drupal platform that collects, analyses and distributes activity data, crediting each reading to the right participant and school and updating the leaderboards and student dashboards from it.

New schemes and sites run as extensions of the same installation. User roles and access levels let each team manage its own area, so Intelligent Health can watch the overall picture without handling every local change.

Activity data processing

Tens of thousands of readings a day, credited to the right child and school.

Leaderboards and dashboards

School leaderboards and personal activity views, updated from the data.

One platform, many schemes

New areas and sites launch on the existing installation.

Role-based access

Each team manages its own area, with checks where they matter.

The outcome

Intelligent Health can launch Beat the Street in a new area without commissioning a new system, and staff learn one platform rather than one per scheme. It is one of a number of activity data projects we have built with Intelligent Health.

Intelligent Health is using London Design Works to create our data processing and content management system, including various websites. We have been truly impressed with their commitment and dedication, and find them flexible and very easy to work with.
